As discussed on episode 5 of FATB here is my take on an alternative Premier League Team Of The Season.
- Tom Heaton
One of the key reasons for Burnley’s success this season has been the 31 year old shot stopper. He has been consistent throughout the season with a Premier League high this seasons of 11 saves in one game against his old club Manchester United at Old Trafford.
- Antonio Valencia
The transformation of a once deadly winger to a confident right back over the past two seasons has been one of beauty for the Ecuadorian International. Defensively he is very solid but going forward there is no better right back in the league with his spectacular crossing ability and burning pace. One personal highlight being the pin point ball for Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s equaliser against Liverpool at Old Trafford…
- Michael Keane
In what is very much looking like a team of past and present Manchester United players the new England International makes the list. A key part of one of the best defences outside the top 10, his tenacious tackling and heading ability makes it understandable why he is being linked back to United.
- Virgil Van Dijk
Despite injury curtailing the Dutch centre backs season I feel it would be criminal to have a team of the season without at least one Southampton player. The Saints have been been consistent season after season, despite losing their best players , and were unlucky to lose the Capital One Cup final, with Van Dijk being their best player this season. With fantastic strength and passing ability, it is understandable why he is being linked to top European Clubs.
- Marcos Alonso
Didn’t make the PFA team of the year, despite being a key part of the outstanding Chelsea defence, which is surely going to win the title. After promising beginnings to his career starting off at Real Madrid , he ended up at Bolton Wanderers and looked to have wasted his promise. But he has shown this season for Chelsea why he was given that promise popping up with key goals and fantastic defensive performances throughout the season. He has also finally given Chelsea a consistent left back back up to Azpilicueta, who has now been moved to the middle due to just how good Alonso has been.
- Raheem Sterling
A controversial one but the young Englishman has finally pinned down his place at Manchester City and is now showing why they paid so much money for him. He was voted as Premier League Player of the month in August and has contributed 6 goals and 6 assists for Manchester City this season from the wing.
- Ander Herrera
Yet another Manchester United player but again this one is fully credited with Ander Herrera having some of the best stats of any midfielder in the Premiership. He has the most interceptions in the league and has had more blocks and clearances this season than PFA Players Player of the year Kante.
- Gylfi Sigurðsson
A star in a struggling Swansea team and has really came into his own this season contributing a massive 20 goals (8 goals and 12 assists) from midfield. With the 3rd highest assists in the Premier League, he has given the Swans some chance of staying up.
- Heung-min Son
Missed out on the PFA team of the season to Eden Hazard but has been a key cog in an exceptional Spurs side this season. Grabbing 12 goals and 4 assists despite only having 7 starts the South Korean has been an impact player who has improved leaps and bounds since his debut season.
- Jermain Defoe
At 34 years old Jermain Defoe shouldn’t still be doing what is he doing with many thinking his career was finished when he moved to Toronto. However, he soon got bored in the US and Sunderland took a chance on him. One which certainly paid off with 14 goals and 2 assists in an awful Sunderland team, that without him would have been relegated months ago.
- Zlatan Ibrahimovic
Another Manchester United player and another player who has had his season cut off early due to injury, but despite this the big Swede is definitely deserving of a mention. With 17 goals and 5 assists this season, despite missing many games due to injuries and suspensions, he has silenced all his critics who said he was too old for the Premier League.
- Tony Pulis- Not only keeping West Brom in the Premier League but consolidating them in 8th place. With a hardly awe inspiring squad including binned striker Rondon, he has turned Gareth McAuley into a goal machine and got the best out of the team. If they manage to keep this position it will be their best finish since 2012-13.
